Attractions include the Little House on the Prairie; Riverside Park, where you
can still ride a merry-go-round for only a nickel; Riverside Zoo, which is home
to bears, buffalo, monkeys, cougars, and a complete aviary; and the Independence
Museum, which houses many interesting antiques and valuable artworks. Other
attractions include the annual William Inge Festival and Collection, the Elk
City Reservoir, and the weeklong Neewollah (Halloween spelled backwards)
Celebration, which attracts more than 70,000 people annually to the area.
Neewollah offers a musical stage show, queen Nelah competition and coronation, a
carnival, street acts, artist alley, and top performers in the entertainment
world. The festival, held the last full week in October, is topped off by one of
the biggest and best parades, a two-hour kaleidoscope of music, color,
pageantry, and fun.
The community features numerous public and private schools, as well as a
vocational and community college. Nearby Pittsburg State University also offers
classes in Independence.
