Laredo was founded on the north bank of the Río Grande on May 15, 1755, when
Captain Tomás Sánchez, with three families, was granted permission to settle 15
leagues of land near the Río Grande. In 1767, the city was laid out, and in the
years to follow, ranching became the sustenance of the colony.
Known today as the city under seven flags, Laredo has emerged as the
principal port of entry into Mexico. As one of the fastest growing cities in the
nation, this border metropolis has greatly benefited from its convenient layout
and an urban core that continues to be reinvigorated as commercial areas and
neighborhoods make the "Gateway City" their home. As a business center, Laredo
also has experienced continuous growth over the years, which can be attributed
to Laredo’s growing importance as a manufacturing and trading center on the
Texas- Mexico border.
The site of Laredo has been a well know point for crossing the Río Grande.
Today, the bridge linking the United States and Mexico accommodates more than
seven million pedestrians annually.
The Laredo community features two public school districts, numerous private
schools, Texas A&M International University, and Laredo Community College. The
area is home to numerous parks, museums and libraries, and has become a center
of international trade. The Laredo International Airport offers travelers a
world-class facility with great service, a comfortable terminal, short waiting
times and excellent facilities.
